A commission for a Swiss/Greek husband and wife, Kavouri House was elected as Europe’s green house of the year in 2007, and featured in the inaugural program of the Discovery Channel’s World’s Networks’ World’s Greenest Homes. The home helped popularized highly insulated masonry construction in the region as well as widespread use of geothermal heating and cooling from the adjacent waters of the bay of Athens. Natural finishes both for the flooring and interior and exterior are almost exclusively made from local clays and sands of the site, and tinted by local oxides. The home accounts for all waste and water consumption both the home and three hectares of local species planted in a forest ecology that supports the needs of the neighboring homes as well as its own needs.
